Finishing Up!

This is so bittersweet! My last post for wire106 and ds106 (hopefully not ds106)! This semester was so much fun and its all thanks to this class! Ds106 was my favorite class I’ve taken so far here at UMW and I’m really glad I decided to take it. I was on the fence over the summer and whether or not I should take it but I don’t regret that decision at all. I learned so much from this class and its helped me learn about what I potentially want to work with as a career. I can’t recommend this class enough!

This class was particularly special because it was an online class. Normally you would think an online class would just be you yourself and you. I think of an online class as sitting down in front of the computer for hours trying to understand the topic. That normally doesn’t work for me, I need hands on experience to learn a topic. I quickly found out that this class was anything but that! Between the weekly lunches, video discussions, and the group projects I quickly learned that this class was something special. I still had the face to face interaction that a traditional lecture class would have, but with no lecture! It was a great mix!

I think the assignments were the best part to the entire class, besides having to watch TV for homework. Although my stomach would drop at the beginning of the week when we all got the weekly emails with our quota for the week and I would be so overwhelmed at the beginning of the week, I really enjoyed them! I would always dread sitting down to plan them, but once I did I knocked them out all in one go. The beginning of the semester was a little rocky but once the semester was in full swing I got the hang of things and now I don’t think I’ll ever forget the skills I learned in ds106.

So as I’m writing this I feel like this:

The semester is almost over! That’s so exciting! But I also feel like this:

I don’t want this class to end! I just want to keep creating things and watching TV for homework! But I do realize that all great things must come to an end. Ds106 was a great chapter in my great novel of my life! So with that being said I don’t think this would be a weekly summary without showing you what I did this week! Take a look! And if you want to see what else I’ve done this semester check out my past weekly summaries at the end of this post.

This week was fun! I had a rough time with the mashups but once I sat down and completed them it was much easier than I thought it was going to be! I also liked the remix. I was tasked to over exggerate a photo, and that was a lot of fun. I just went crazy with the filters. The Motivational epigraph was a lot of fun too! So here’s what I did this week:

Videos Galore!

Hi! So these weeks were a lot of fun! Although this week was really cold, I found that editing was the perfect thing to keep the time from passing slowly!

This is how I feel since the temperature dropped!

I really like video editing so I loved that we had to create the Swede! That was by far my favorite episode. Also this week I loved looking back on other people’s work and see what they created this week! As I’m writing this I’m at home in Virginia Beach, sitting in a local coffee shop and I’m trying not to laugh out loud at the videos! Some of these are hysterical.

Radio Show Week!

Hi guys! So this week was the radio show week! So as a group, Demi, David, Amy and I decided we would create a news reel for different events that happened throughout the Wire. We met twice during the process of creating the radio show, once to brainstorm what we were going to do and the second time to finalize what was going on and pick what specific part we were going to create. . We created a google doc of our ideas! So we decided to create our own “sub” radio station called 76.5. From there we each made a different story that happened throughout the course of the show, mainly throughout season 2. So I did a story on the yacht that was stuck in the shipping channel, a story on Ziggy’s rampage and the stolen cars. Once everyone was done with their parts they emailed me the files so I could put them all together in Audacity. I put everything together and I created an intro and an ending to the show. I really enjoy making all of the different assignments we have and I think its really a good thing to do. I’ve always wanted to start creating different things on the web and this is a great way to do it! I just love the process it takes to make a final product. It gives a great sense of accomplishment when you finish something that you have put a great lot of effort into it. One of my favorite parts to these assignments the editing process! I think that’s one of my favorite things, to take the different pieces and put them together to make one great thing! I really think this process turned out really well.

Another part I did to the show is a bumper sticker. I took the logo that David created and I added a little slogan to it!

So here it is! The final product to the radio show! Enjoy!

Getting the Hang of Things

Hi! This is a week summary that was from a while back, during week 3. I didn’t have a weekly summary but here it is now! During week 3 we were given the task to complete 3 different assignments from the different assignment banks, whether they be from, design, audio, visual etc. I remember making the infograph and I really enjoyed that! The web assignment was fun too, it was interesting to look at the different characters.

Here are my Posts:

A New Spin on A Storyline Design

~Here I used a website to create a infograph about an episode in the Wire, season 2 episode 1. I added pictures where I told the basic premise of the episode

Beatrice Russell As a Pinner Web

~In this assignment I made a Pinterest board about Beatrice Russell. I found a link to things that she would possibly like and I created a board of about 20 pins describing her character.

Daily Create:

Early Morning Meal with My Cats

~In this daily create we had to take a picture of something our pets do regularly. I wrote about how my cats would be sitting down at the kitchen table with me every morning.

Live Tweeting:

First Live Tweeting Session

~I had a lot of fun with this. It really brings a sense of community to the class and it tears down that typical barrier of the online class that there will be no outside contact from the class, just through the computer screen.

I didn’t do any commenting this week but I have been improving on the commenting since then!

It was also really cool to look back on the different assignments that I did over the past weeks!

Another Week With Audio

Hey guys! Here is my weekly summary! I am definitely enjoying this time off that and I hope you guys are too! This week was another week filled with audio. At first I thought this was a daunting week but I really enjoyed it! These assignments were a great distraction from my actual work since my brain was on fall break mode already. I continued to work with audacity and I am getting to know it more and more.

One of the major assignments we had this week is the Radio show. We have to create a 20-30minute radio show based on The Wire. MY group is going to do a news broadcast of the different crimes that have happened throughout the show! We each have a 5 minute segment and we will split those segments up with the bumpers and the advertisements.

So with that said here’s what I did this week!

An Interesting Week with Design

I really enjoyed this week topic of design. Although I had a hard time with the aspect of design I really got the hang of it by the end of the week! Most of the assignments I completed with Photoshop and I have to say I really like using it to create the different images. Here is my Design Blitz! I also participated in the discussion for season 2 episode 10.

During this week I made it a point to improve my commenting skills! Here are the posts I commented on this week:

I also had a lot of fun with the design assignments:

Here are my Daily Creates!

Looking forward to next week!

A Cool Week with Visuals

So this week was awesome! I really liked how it was a visual week. I really enjoy things like taking pictures and I was looking forward to the different assignments we could do! By far my favorite assignment was Favorite Lyrics! I really liked how I could use my own pictures to show the emotion of the song. My favorite picture is this one that has the song Between the Raindrops by Lifehouse on it

Here it is on Flickr!
Here it is on Flickr!

I think this is one of my favorite pictures that I’ve taken!

The next assignment was can you spot the difference? I thought this one was a cool one too because as a kid I always loved looking at the pictures to spot the difference. Those pictures kept me busy for hours! Can you spot the difference in the pictures?

Check it out on Flickr!

I posted the answer to the differences over here!

The final post I did this week was a StoryMap. I created a map about my trip to London I had over winter break. I really enjoyed creating this assignment as well! I had some trouble getting the post to show the map before but I was able to figure it out with the help of Professor Groom! My post can be found over here!

I also did a daily create! This one was to post about what was on the radio!

My Photoblitz!

This week were supposed to watch Episode 6, 7, and 8 in season 2 of the Wire. Since this week was visual, during our live tweeting sessions we watched the episode without the sound! I thought that was really cool, but it was really different. I participated in the showing of Episode 6! I didn’t watch the episode before watching it without the sound so I was confused during the episode. The rest of the episodes were great! I am really beginning to enjoy the show so I may have done a little binge watch this week. Oops!

As well as the live tweeting I also participated in the weekly video discussion we had for each of the episodes we watch during the week. I was a part of episode 7 this week! Check that out over here!

I really enjoyed this week and I’m looking forward to next week!
